By the time NHS members and newly minted inductees strolled down Villa Siena’s aisles last week, they had already exemplified the society’s pillars of scholarship and service in countless ways. In its second year, Tempe Prep’s NHS chapter has led several fundraising campaigns, and its members have been involved in hundreds of hours of volunteer work.
For the second time, NHS participated in a Krispy Kreme Valentine’s Day fundraiser. Over the three-day donut deal, starting from 5 a.m., seniors picked up the heart-shaped confections and began their early morning sales. Business on the first day was slow, observed a student, but picked up on the second day. “The third day,” senior and donut salesman Tyler Gardner said, “was completely amazing.”
Donut mania ensued at Tempe Prep. “When we arrived at school,” Tyler recounted, “I was completely shocked by the demand for the donuts. People were in a frenzy to get their hands on one, especially near the end. We ran out of them well before school even started!”
Additionally, NHS advisor Mrs. Moffitt helped arrange an innovative pre-order service so that parents could purchase donuts on their way to work, generating sales of dozens more boxes ─ and luring in more than a few hungry grown ups.
NHS’s efforts raised over $150 for Feed My Starving Children, enough to purchase more than 650 meals for those in need. Coupled with the group’s last session at FMSC, the society has packed over 5,000 meals.
