If you’re looking for a way to fulfill those required community service hours, or just want a fun and educational activity, look no further. Teen Court is a volunteer opportunity for ALL Tempe Prep students, from sixth graders to seniors, in which students sit on a jury and determine the consequences for juvenile offenders.
They hear the cases, ask the defendant questions, and then deliberate on a justified consequence. It truly is a “jury of one’s peers.” There are also opportunities to fill other roles in the legal system such as defense and prosecution attorney, bailiff, and clerk. Teen Court was increasingly popular last year among high school students when the sessions were held at Tempe High.
Students can still attend Tempe High sessions on the first Wednesday of every month, but now, Teen Court is offered at Tempe Prep, and will be held after school from 3:30-5:30 every fourth Monday of the month. The first session is on Monday, Sept. 22, and there will be an orientation from 3-3:30.
This is a great way to earn community service hours, NHS service hours, and learn about the legal system!
