As the number on the Weather Channel drops, so does the number of high school cross country runners one may observe after school. The sidewalks along Southern are no longer overrun by sweaty kids in short shorts and less neon yellow is seen around campus. Though the season is over, the Tempe Prep cross country team went out with a bang.
On Nov. 8 the girls’ team made their way to Cave Creek to run 3.1 miles in the state championship meet. They truly gave their all, with two team members placing in the top 25 girls and the single boys’ qualifier making it into the top 40. Senior Rachel Matsumoto placed 21st out of the 138 girls running in Division 4 and freshman Katherine Kamberg placed 25th.
Many athletes achieved new personal records, including Bella DiCaro and Emma Moriarty. When asked what her highlight of the season was, freshman Emma Moriarty responded, “I think most memorable and fun part of the season was at the Desert Twilight meet when it was a half day so everyone decided to go to Lobby’s for lunch. The look on my teammates’ faces as they hit mile 1.5 was hilarious. Life advice from Emma #1: do not ever eat a hamburger and two servings of fries with a chocolate milkshake before running 3.1 miles.”
Thank you Emma for that amazing advice! Overall, the 2014 high school cross country season was very successful, both score-wise, athletic-wise, and fun-wise!
Volleyball
The Tempe Prep high school volleyball team had great success throughout the 2014 fall season. The varsity volleyball team qualified to play at state and put up a great effort but in the end lost to Northland Prep Academy, missing by just one win.
Cumulatively, the varsity volleyball team had a great season including amazing wins against Horizon Honors, Parker High, and Bourgade Catholic.
