If you know anything about sports, you know 17-14 is a score more common to football than softball. But that’s the score that our Knights softball team beat Gilbert Classical by to start their season. Despite not having a single junior or senior on the team, the Knights battled from behind with six runs in the fourth inning to win the game.
Catcher Capi Sampson said, “The Gilbert Classical game was a good start to the season. We were very excited because we weren’t expected to win. We communicated very well and had great teamwork.”
The team’s lack of upperclassmen has forced young players to step into leadership positions. The team’s three sophomores have helped to teach the team’s many freshmen about the game. This has helped the Knights to play better than anyone could expect from such a young squad.
Freshman Marie Beguhl said, “The team leaders are very encouraging and they take time to help us with our skills. They really help us get in the right mindset. They are good examples of the attitude you need to be successful in softball.”
It’s a long season coming up, and we can expect a lot of success from our softball team. We are excited to see them build on their season-opening victory.
