Girls soccer team concludes rewarding building season

By Carter Sampson

The girls soccer team used to struggle to fill out an 11-player roster. Now, the program has become one of the most popular at TPA. Thanks to a strong senior class and talented younger players, the Knights have become a strong team that threatens almost every opponent they play.

GVarsitySoccer027A tough season became even more difficult when the team’s starting goalie left the school halfway through the season. This left a hole at one of the most important positions on the field, which several players stepped up to fill. Freshmen Monserrat Larios and Brie Van Dahm both worked hard at goalie to keep their team in games.

The team still enjoyed themselves despite the challenges they experienced. Captain Solange Steadman says they were able to “bond with the team and have a really fun time whether we won or lost.” Emily Casey, another captain, echoed Solange, saying the team learned “how to be patient and have a good time even when you are not the best.”

Most of the Knights’ goals this season came from underclassmen, so the future is certainly bright. However, the seniors were essential this year on defense for the team’s success. Captains Maria Zello, Emily Casey, and Solange Steadman all held down the back line against tough opposition.

While wins were hard to come by, every player became better and grew closer together. Solange says girls should join if they “want to have a good time learning a fun sport.” That is certainly what they did this year, and it was fun to watch them improve. Go Knights!
