Upperclassmen triumphant in first TPA Powderpuff game

On Wed., Sept. 19, Tempe Prep history was made. Football has always been a big part of the TPA community and it has always been a male-dominated sport. On the 19th, steps were taken to tackle that problem. The first ever Powderpuff football game was played.

Powder Puff 2Powderpuff football is an up and coming league for high school girls to participate in flag football games through their school. It allows girls to have a good time and play an organized game of football, an opportunity that is not exactly common.

Tempe Prep’s first game was a classic battle of the upperclassmen versus the underclassmen. With help from the coaches, volunteers from the varsity football squad, and referees Jonathan Lambros and Natsuki Saballos, the stage was set for an incredible game.

Underclassmen coach Hayden Sampson described it saying, “The way that the girls were excited and the energy in the air, you could tell it was going to be a monumental moment.”

Under the Wednesday night lights, the two teams played a game that lived up to its potential. It was an intense battle as the teams exchanged touchdowns in a close scoring game.

Finally, in the last minutes of the game, Junior Rebekah Stein made her way into the end zone, securing a 21-14 victory for the upperclassmen. The upperclassmen celebrated their monumental win with the Tempe Prep tradition of singing Nos Nobis. The ecstatic faces of the players showed what a great night it had been. A night of fun and a turning point in the history of Tempe Prep football, showing that, in the words of sophomore Monserrat Larios, “Girls can play dirty too.”
