As crazy as it sounds, sometimes the best thing for a team at the start of the season is to play tough opponents and lose some games. This is definitely true for our Lady Knights on the high school volleyball team.
With teams like Leading Edge and Valley Lutheran at the start of the season, it was hard to go out and get more than a few wins. Bree Van Dahm said, “The first half of our season was all away games, so it was something new that we had to adjust to.” Quickly, however, things began to turn around. Because their second half of the season was all home games, Tempe Prep supporters began to liven the stands, and the team gave them something to cheer for.
After coming from a statewide tournament and winning 3 out of 5 games, things began to pick up. In the most recent games since the tournament, our Lady Knights have gone undefeated, winning all four games in 3 sets. The last game, against Leading Edge, was an upset and definitely something the team could use in a playoff run. A certain triumphant feeling comes from getting revenge on a team for a loss earlier in the season, and that was just what it felt like for the volleyball girls.
When asked how the team felt going into the game, Abbi Harb said, “We really wanted to beat them after we lost to them, and everyone knew that it was important that we win. The girls came out ready to win, and sure enough, we did.”

The swim team has also been showing considerable improvements as well as some serious competition for state. Maya Kostov, a sophmore on the team, says, “This has been one of our best years so far, because from the beginning of the season we were all very experienced swimmers so it was very easy to build up that skill and not take a long time to strengthen our stamina. We have a few more meets and then qualifiers, and I’m confident we can get more and more of our players into state.”
With only a few weeks to go, multiple swimmers are being considered for state: Ehsa Murray, Coralee Stough, Lily Cozens, Hannah Stough, Gracie Smaw, Nick Hudson, and Josh Hudson. Everyone seems to be on board, and with more meets to come, potential continues to rise. Our swim team will definitely be one to watch throughout the next few years.
