How to protect yourself and others from the coronavirus

By Hannah Frazier

Social distancing- the phrase of the year and a great way to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Staying at home not only keeps you safe, but also protects the wellbeing of others.

It is important to do what you can to protect people. There are many simple precautions you can take that can prevent consequences. For example, cough into your elbow to prevent respiratory droplets from infecting someone nearby.

The virus can be spread to people who come within more than 6 feet from each other. That is why it is important to avoid touching your face and making contact with others.

If you begin to feel sick or experience symptoms of the virus, wear a mask to protect others and attempt to contain the virus as best as you can.

Another way to stay protected is washing your hands thoroughly and often. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, “Handwashing is one of the best ways to protect yourself and your family from getting sick.” The most commonly missed places when washing hands are the thumbs, between fingers, and around the fingernails. Be sure to wash your hands for at least 30 seconds to make sure that they really are clean. It is important to wash your hands before and after eating, after sneezing or coughing, after using the restroom, after touching garbage, and after touching an animal or animal food.

Using hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol is a good way to clean your hands if you don’t have access to soap and water. The CDC also recommends cleaning the home frequently to keep the virus at bay. One responsible person can protect the health of many others.

Remember to stay safe and keep the wellbeing of people around you in mind.
