Over the past six months, professional sports have been at the forefront of the news as it has dealt with the pandemic, politics, and other pressing issues. Although TPA sports have nowhere near the platform, the challenges in getting the fall season underway have been prominent.
It has felt like everything is uncertain for everyone paying attention and even the people involved. For Tempe Prep Athletic Director, Doug Seagrave, it has been quite the first year at a new school. “We certainly worried that we would not have sports this fall,” Mr. Seagrave said. Still, he has accepted the madness and done as much as he could for our athletes. Following the guidelines set by the Arizona Interscholastic Association, Mr. Seagrave has gotten practices underway. Implementing masks, distancing, sanitizing, and other tools, athletes are back to competing against their teammates and perfecting their craft.
Competitions against other schools have been the biggest concern. Finally, those competitions are not out of reach. With scheduled games and meets in the upcoming weeks, all high school sports can practically feel that adrenaline rush that is pure competition.
As for those who want to be a part of it and cheer on their friends, it isn’t the worst possible situation. The changes will be felt as attendance restrictions and masks will be implemented for fans, and concessions will be removed for the time being. Still, if you scream loud enough, the athletes should be able to hear you.
It is good to be back on campus and it wouldn’t really feel complete until sports were going on. And maybe it still won’t feel complete, but it’s a big jump for the Tempe Prep culture. A culture that makes students want to be better and maximize their potential.
