Social hierarchy was a big problem for centuries for people all over the world. When the Tempe Prep girls soccer team plays, it is much harder to make any class distinctions. The team has gotten contributions from all grade levels and it has been a relief for many.
The senior class is led by captains Cienna Jaime, Kylie Klassen, and Allie Youngs. It has been a crazy senior season, no doubt, but the girls are happy with what they’ve been able to make of it. “Even with all the craziness of Covid, it still felt like the season we were hoping for,” says Allie Youngs. The team has gone 5 and 7 through their first 12 games with one game to go. Maybe not the record they were hoping for, but it should be enough to give them a shot at making a late run in the state tournament.
Behind the seniors, the rest of the team has shown they have a promising future. With Juniors Amy Gonzalez and Karina Bellavia holding down the right side, and Hailey Henderson finding the back of the net a couple times this season, leadership will not be a problem next year.
But the sophomore class is definitely a special one. Dahlia Welter currently leads the team with goals scored and is going to be fun to watch for years to come. The sophomore class also includes strong players such as Maia Carbajal and Kailee Austin who have played meaningful minutes throughout the season.
Even the freshmen have put forward some great performances. With Jolie Saliego protecting the net and Thomasina Hurlbut connecting passes up the field, the team has some clear depth.
Still, the team will look to close out this season strong before moving on. If the girls take care of business against Lincoln Prep, they should secure themselves a spot in a play-in game. It’s what they’ve been working for all season, so they should be ready to play with their season on the line, but it will definitely be a challenge. It will require every player, from senior to freshman, from starter to bench player, to want to win.
