Marzuk Hasan explains how he was able to get perfect PSAT score

By Theresa O’Connor

I know achieving a perfect score on a standardized test is not easy. When it comes down to preparing and taking the PSAT, there are so many things to worry about: the pressure, the time constraints, and forgetting a number two pencil! But, Junior Marzuk Hasan has shown us it is very much possible!

Hasan MarzukThe PSAT, or preliminary SAT, is a standardized test designed for high school students to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship and prepare for the actual SAT. At TPA, the PSAT is offered to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Scoring well on the PSAT opens up new opportunities for college scholarships and prepares students for acing the SAT. Yet, there are many steps and provisions needed to do well on this test. Luckily, Marzuk Hasan has shared his insight and tips on how he was able to earn a perfect score!

It all begins with studying well and effectively. It is important to set aside time and effort to work on unfamiliar skills and concepts that are presented on the PSAT. Marzuk says, “Take as many quality practice tests as you can, and write down all the problems you get wrong in a separate location. Make sure you understand why you got them wrong and how to ensure those mistakes do not happen on test day. Then, just write down important concepts that you need to brush up on and review. Finally before test day, review these challenging problems and concept notes so that you are ready to ace the test!”

Just like Marzuk states, taking practice tests and going over missed questions are ideal ways to review different areas that need to be touched up on. Organizing a study system that works for you is a key component in setting yourself up for success!

With summer around the corner, it is also a great time to start signing up for PSAT prep classes and planning an agenda to study for the PSAT! Marzuk says that studying during the summer and understanding what he needed most help with, allowed him to focus on his problem areas. Especially during the summer, it is helpful to work towards attaining a good score on this test, because during the school year there is limited time to study. Marzuk says to prioritize what is most important to understand for the test and study that first!

There are multiple different options for PSAT courses and seminars. For instance, Tempe Prep offers PSAT prep classes for high school students to prepare them for the math, reading, and writing portions of the test. Mazuk also recommends other studying tools and classes he found useful: “Khan academy is a great place to start for math practice and finding what you struggle with. I would highly recommend the program by Boston Academy for both English and math. They give accurate tests and focused guidance that really helps.” There are many more possibilities and lesson courses that students can participate in to improve their comprehension for the PSAT!

Most importantly, feeling confident by working hard and taking the necessary steps in order to receive a high score, will help many when it comes to test day. Marzuk remarks, “I would say that it is very important to take lots of practice tests and to not be nervous. You got this! You just have to study more and make sure to keep your focus when studying.”

Congratulations to Marzuk Hasan for his accomplishments!
