TPA girls’ basketball scores win at Footprint Arena

By Theresa O’Connor

Not many high school athletes have the chance to play at the Phoenix Sun’s Footprint Arena, let alone win a game on a professional basketball court.

Yet, this dream became a reality for the Tempe Prep girls high school basketball team, which beat Superior there 41-29 on Dec. 22.

“Playing in the Suns Arena was by far the most fun basketball game I’ve ever played in,” senior and team captain, Julia Cady says, “it was such a good memory for our team!” Coach Antonio McClary agrees and said the team “balled out” that game.

The team is nearing the close of its season and despite not always getting the outcome they hoped for, the girls have grown closer through team bonding and cooperation on the court.

“We are so lucky to have been such good friends as well as teammates,” junior Hannah Frazier says. “For our most recent team bonding activity, we decorated Christmas cookies together around the holidays and went to play basketball at a park.” The team also eats lunch together, which allows the members to connect with each other. In every sport, strong bonds between teammates are essential for on-the-court communication.

With a current record of 6-8, the team has faced tough losses but has improved and grown. Julia says, “I have seen the team improve in many ways over the season. A few being layups, passing, and court awareness!”

The athletes also have developed their coordination and mobility, which helps with technique and offensive and defensive skills. “I love developing players, says Coach Clary. “For me, it begins with the core fundamentals: dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defending. I believe the team as a whole has advanced most in their ability to handle and dribble the basketball.”

“As we approach the final leg of the season the Lady Knights are working hard to finish the season by competing each and every outing,” says Coach McClary.

The team’s next home game is scheduled for Feb. 1 against Lincoln Prep.
