Baking, D&D Clubs added to extracurriculars

With the fourth quarter of the school year approaching quickly, Tempe Prep has a couple of new clubs, proving that it is never too late to start or join an extracurricular club.

While discussing clubs they would like to see at TPA, freshmen Ellie Han and Lilly Maxwell decided to take matters into their own hands and started a baking club. Ellie says, “We both like to bake, so we thought it would be nice if we could start a baking club at TPA.”

The Baking Club meets every Tuesday after school in the old faculty house, taking advantage of the kitchen for student use which had not been possible before. Every week, the club tests out new recipes and makes tasty treats.

The D&D club has also been added to TPA’s list of extracurriculars. Started by junior Alejandro Lucero, the club helps bring together those who already love Dungeons and Dragons with those hoping to learn how to play. Alejandro says, “I decided to start a club because D&D is something I learned and started via an after-school club so I might as well spread the knowledge of that great game here to TPA.” Mr. Veenstra, the club’s advisor, has been playing D&D for 20 years and offers advice on certain situations in the game.

D&D Club is a collaborative environment where players bounce ideas off each other and help create characters or campaign ideas. The club meets on Thursdays after school in room 405 and welcomes newcomers. They plan to start a campaign of one shots (short stories that stand alone), using standardized characters for anyone to use.

Junior Youssef Allam decided to join the club as someone who really enjoys playing D&D in his free time. He says, “It… encourages quick and creative thinking that I otherwise don’t get to use a whole lot.”
