On March 28 TPA’s Congressional Award Club hosted a community service project, using recycled plastic bags to create plastic yarn, or Plarn, to crochet sleeping mats for those experiencing homelessness in Arizona.
During the club’s monthly meeting, Mr. Wagstaff and Ms. Madison, from the non-profit organization DSquared Homes for the Homeless, led the participants through the activity and taught them how to make the mats. Students cut, tied and crocheted the plastic. “It felt really nice to be able to help others,” said sophomore Nick Patterson.
DSquared Homes for the Homeless is a non-profit organization that aims to prevent homelessness among the Seriously Mentally Ill, or SMI, through community outreach programs, including the Plarn program.
If you want to help your community, earn service hours and spend time with friends, Congressional Award Club’s next meeting is April 25 in the new building’s Art Room, where they will continue with their Plarn project.
