The new members of the National Honor Society were inducted into the Tempe Prep chapter in May.
All those who were inducted were current juniors, and the event was put on by the class of 2024 members of NHS with the help of Mrs. Moffit, the chapter advisor.
NHS is an honors society that has chapters in high schools all across the world. To be accepted into the society students have to fill out a form and meet lots of rigorous requirements, such as a 3.0 GPA, service hours and active participation in the TPA community. This year, 25 juniors were inducted.
The ceremony started with a speech by the current president of TPA’s NHS chapter, Tevin Nguyen. Following that, there was a musical number and several speeches by other officers about the events the chapter held throughout the year and the service activities they participated in, as well as the pillars of NHS.
The distinguished teacher award was given to Herr Gray, TPA’s German teacher. Before the ceremony the senior NHS members vote on who to give the award to. Senior Dayanara Gamez gave a speech about Herr Gray and why he was chosen for the award.
After the new members were inducted and gave the pledge, everyone sang “Gaudeamus Igitur,” a song in Latin that is one of the oldest known student songs. Borislava Panayotova, this year’s Teen Court President, said, “I think (the) induction went really well this year. There were a lot more people than the last time I went for my induction so it was awesome to see so much support for the NHS and for the juniors joining it. It might have seemed scary but everyone did a great job and I’m excited to see what our new officers have in store for the TPA NHS chapter.”
