Tempe Prep wrestlers rack up big wins this season

As a young athlete, progress is the only thing that matters next to winning. Luckily for eighth graders Nick Murray and Ben Moriarty, not only did they progress, but they won, taking first and second place respectively in their weight classes at the CAA State Championship meet.

Another talented wrestler, Sophomore Louis Ternyik says, “For such a young program, the season went really well. It was a huge step for our team, and I couldn’t be more exciting. We are going to have a solid base next year and the years to come, with our middle schoolers leading the way. I can tell you right now that this team is gonna have the next four years with amazing leaders who are experienced and committed.”

With a winning record, 10-7, and the most wins for the high school team, Louis knows what he’s talking about. His advice to newer wrestlers as well as other athletes: “Training is the biggest part of wrestling and sports. Our coach pushes us to our limits to make sure we achieve our best every day, especially coach DeSilva.”

While the less experienced wrestlers did not win as many matches, they did a great job for being fresh on the scene, and learned more about the sport than what they could at practice. In total, these athletes have not only learned about the sport, but have begun to compete at a higher level, one that will be hard to keep up with in the years to come.
