For many high schoolers, volunteering is a big priority. They do things like help at the library, work at shelters, community events, and many other things. Sofia Reyes, a TPA freshman, spends her volunteer time at Project CURE.
C.U.R.E. is an acronym for Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment. Project CURE is a large warehouse that sorts and distributes medical supplies. The organization brings supplies to people in other countries. Sofia goes about once a month during the school year, and often in the summer. She either goes alone or with the rest of her family.
Sofia enjoys being at Project CURE, sorting, packaging, and labeling. She found out about the organization after being emailed by Mrs. Moffitt. Sofia started volunteering there in December of 2017. She also spends her volunteer time with peer mediation twice a week and is on the City of Chandler Teen Advisory Council. As a member, Sofia helps organize teen activities and events at the Chandler library.
Sofia encourages others to volunteer at Project CURE, as it is a great place for hard-working high schoolers to volunteer at: “It kind of has a feel for a work environment.”
