Would you like the opportunity to win $5,000 for yourself and $5,000 for TPA using your math skills? Tempe Prep has an awesome new club called Math Society that lets math whiz kids show off their skills and compete in math competitions with some pretty serious rewards. Tempe Prep is such a smart school, it’s surprising that we have not had a Math Society earlier. Not only is Math Society a fun extracurricular, but it is a place for people who genuinely enjoy math to share their common interest.
The society was founded by Junior Annie Meacham who was inspired by the Joaquin-Bustoz Math Science Honors Program which she attended over summer. Annie gained a new appreciation for math that she wanted to share with others. She hopes that Math Society helps everyone else either grow or gain that same appreciation.
Math Society will participate in multiple competitions which will help them get the ball rolling for the club’s future. “Rome was not built in a day, and neither will Math Society, because I feel as though we will become more organized and have more goals as we go and grow,” Annie says.
Math Society also recently took a math test for the Who Wants to be a Mathematician competition. The competition’s winner receives $5,000 and an additional $5,000 for their school’s math department. The test had ten questions for the first qualifying round’s test. The questions were a mixture of basic high school math as well as other, more in-depth math questions. The math questions were very challenging as only one person out of many qualified for the next round of the competition.
Junior Kelsey Bush scored a 7/10 which was the score needed to qualify for round two. Kelsey’s next test was on Oct. 4 and unfortunately she did not qualify. Kelsey still did amazing and her skills show a lot of potential for future Math Society competitions.
Math Society hopes to continue to develop and improve their math skills as a community. Talk to a member about joining if you’d like to explore your interest in mathematics!
