Contrary to popular belief, we have many amazing singers in school. The fact that the next spring play is a musical just like last year is proof enough. Into the Woods is a gigantic, interconnected fairy tale with a twist.

The first act is mainly the ordinary fairy tales: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and the Beanstalk), Rapunzel, Aladdin, Ariel, etc. The second is the aftermath of those stories.

Spoiler Alert! Some of the characters don’t survive. However, there are characters that are completely made up – the baker and his wife. They are not truly fairy tale characters but are the main point of the story

This year’s cast is really something special. “Really, we have the perfect people for it,” says Mr. Sanderson of the cast. Though the score may be hard and time-consuming, the cast is up to the task. The role of the baker has been given to senior Eric Johnson and the baker’s wife is junior Clara Moffitt. Another protagonist, the witch, will be portrayed by senior Rochelle Lilly.

The rest of the cast is made up of more juniors and seniors with freshmen and sophomores. There are even seventh and eighth graders. Each person chosen has a powerful vocal range perfect for this score. The score is made up of about 16 songs.

There is also a difficult part of putting on a musical production, especially with Into the Woods. That part is finding all the necessary props and costumes. Most musicals have a lot of scenes and that makes it hard in preparation. Not only that but the play has very specific props that would be hard to find. However, there is a solution. Mr. Sanderson plans to “get some help from theater friends around the area.”

Rehearsals start Feb. 3. The production will be finished late April around the 23rd to the 26th. The doors are open to anyone.
