Tempe Prep Latin students fare well in competition

By Clark Campbell

Are you interested in the Classics? Or have you ever wanted to share your skills with mythology and history? AZJCL, or The Arizona Junior Classical League, is the club run by Ms Palumbo, which gives students the chance to compete in different sets of classics competition to win awards.

There are four areas of competition: athletic, academic, creative, and graphic, so all students can support the club by utilizing their skills and talents. This year, with the world-wide Covid-19 pandemic, the competitions could not take place in person. This unfortunately means that the athletic portion had to be cut from the entire convention as a whole. Fortunately, though, the other aspects of the competition were still on and have taken place.

Many of the tests were taken online, and all art was submitted virtually. Even though many schools could not participate in the convention as usual, TPA still did very well. Tempe Prep had representatives in about all of the categories, as well as first places all around. Aside from all these awards, the Advanced Certamen team, which participates in a quiz bowl, received the 3th place award. Overall Tempe Prep won more than 70 awards!

Of course this isn’t TPA’s first year doing well, in 2007 Tempe Prep won 44 awards in various categories. A big contributor to this was Amalia Skilto, who was the top classicist for each year she participated in the AZJCL. TPA has been growing in the classics department for years, and we seem to have peaked this year.

This weird yet great way to still participate in the convention has shown the great heights that we can achieve using online services to connect with each other and even other schools. So look out for ways to participate in your clubs by finding ways to support the school in as many ways as possible.
