Yee Haw! This was the sound coming from some cowboys in the football stands. On Oct. 31, Tempe Prep had its fall senior night. The football team had a game against Cicero Prep that night, and it was at half time that each senior doing a fall sport was recognized. Each senior got to walk across the field with whomever they chose to lead them.
One Senior, Malia Williams, was led across the field by two of her close friends. Another senior, Maya Kostov, was led across by the famous Doc Hickernell. And Noah Frazier, yet another fantastic senior, was led across the field by his whole family. All these seniors had one thing in common. They were all led across the field by someone that loved and supported them through their sport.
While Senior Night was specifically designed to honor seniors in fall sports, it had a deeper purpose. Senior Night did not just honor students for their accomplishment in sports, it honored the seniors for all the hard work that got them to where they are.
Tempe Prep is a difficult school, and senior year is the culmination. Many of these seniors have been at Tempe Prep from 6th grade; some came later. There is no one path to success, yet every senior at Tempe Prep finds this success. And why not honor these seniors for their hard work?
What also made Senior Night especially fun, was that it took place on Halloween. The game went from about 3-6 p.m., so there was plenty of time after for some Halloween fun. Students were also encouraged to dress up in their costumes for the game, and the results were outstanding! There were cowboys, 80’s greasers, Among Us characters, and many others.
There was so much that happened on Senior Night, but it all centered around the football game against Cicero Prep. The football team beat Cicero with flying colors. Every time a touchdown pass was caught, or Tyrone “Bubba” Jordan, the team’s running back, made a good play, or Ridley Diez de Medina got a tackle, the crowd went wild! The energy at the game was insane! All the students had tons of fun cheering and watching the cheerleaders perform their practiced cheers.
Now this game is really starting to sound like a breeding ground for Covid-19, right? That was not the case. Masks were worn by everyone in the crowd, and the cheerleaders, who were able to remove their masks, distanced while cheering. A winning game, costumes, fantastic energy, and honoring our hardworking seniors: 2020’s fall Senior Night will be one to remember.
