Although the Tempe Prep boys’ basketball team started its season with a loss, they recently won their game against Basis Phoenix 62-64 on Dec. 7 and now have a 6-2 record. Through the leadership of new coaches and the right mindset, the boys’ team has started its season strong.
The Knights began their season with a new coaching staff led by head coach David Lane, and have already seen immense growth. Through pushing the players, the coaching staff has made a huge difference in how the boys play. Senior and captain Bubba Jordan says, “They hold us accountable to certain standards of success. They make it clear what they expect us to do and how far we can go but also show us how to get to our goal.”
Junior Clark Campbell agrees, explaining how the coaching staff has helped the team improve. He says, “Our new coaches are awesome! They provide a super diverse set of skills that really benefit the team.”
Another factor in the team’s success is the mindset of the athletes. Bubba says, “We all love each other like brothers. We’re one family who takes care of each other. All we got, all we need.” He also adds that support from TPA fans makes a positive difference in the team’s atmosphere. He says, “The best part of the season is having a crowd at our basketball games. It completely changes the energy and the way our team plays. It’s an amazing feeling.”
With the new coaching staff and great team energy, the boys are looking forward to their upcoming games. Their goal this season is to make the playoffs and go as far as the championship round. The next game is Thursday, Dec. 16 at Heritage Academy.
