Have you ever wished you could see the Christ the Redeemer statue up close?
Tempe Prep sophomore Emily Youngs is excited to see this statue in person while studying abroad this summer. Emily was one of 120 high school students in the U.S. to be selected for a full scholarship to study abroad in Brazil with the U.S. State Department and Georgetown University’s Youth Ambassadors Program.
Emily will spend three weeks over the summer engaging in workshops, community service activities, meetings with local leaders and many other life-changing experiences.
The Youth Ambassadors Program strives to promote mutual understanding and prepare youth to become leaders. Emily wants to study abroad so that she can be a part of an immersive cultural experience and discover new things. She is also eager to gain a broader perspective of the world and see global issues first hand.
Emily chose to study abroad in Brazil because of its “vibrant culture, beautiful landmarks and nature in their countries.” She is also excited about the different outdoor activities she’ll have the chance to do. While in Brazil, she may go ziplining, biking, canoeing and more.
This will be Emily’s first time studying abroad and leaving the continent. She was inspired to study abroad by her dad who, in college, enjoyed his own experience in Mexico. Emily said that he “supported me every step of the way with my applications.” He will be accompanying Emily to her pre-orientation in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. Moffitt also inspired Emily to take full advantage of this opportunity by sending her the application, giving up her office for Emily’s interviews and helping her find the best recommendations.
