Capture the flag! S’mores! Trike races! Midnight Madness was a blast for all the 6th and 7th graders who attended.
The event, which lasted from 8 p.m. to midnight, separated the participants into groups by grade and gender. These four groups would then travel through all the stations including s’mores & up high nine-square, a “hang-out” station, basketball/ volleyball and trike races.
Joel Waisenen, one of the 7th graders who attended, especially enjoyed the s’mores station. “My favorite activity was probably s’mores and up high nine square because of the tastiness of the s’mores and the experience of burning the s’mores over the fire with your friends,” he said.
Another favorite, trike racing, was done in the field as a sort of relay race. Students lined up behind a trike and, when their turn came, would ride the trike around a couple of cones, handing it off to the next person in line when they were done, until everyone finished.
Additionally, there were collective activities such as beach ball volleyball and dodgeball. With these, students would compete in different groups against each other, e.g., Boys v. Girls, 6th v. 7th, etc., with the leaders (high schoolers who volunteered to help with the event) keeping track of the score.
To end the night the 6th and 7th graders competed against each other in capture the flag, taking up the whole field and wearing glowing wristbands to signify their team. Students were given the option to play either offense (trying to make it into the other team’s territory and take their flag) or defense (protecting the flag and tagging out people who tried to steal it).
“Although I won’t be able to participate next year,” Joel said, “I wish all the best of luck for the new incoming 7th and 6th graders; I was very glad I went.”
