On a Wednesday morning in September, a rare event is occurring: juniors and seniors are talking to sixth graders over milk and donuts. They’re asking each other questions about each other’s interests, activities, and future plans. And they actually seem to be enjoying it. Could it be the donuts that are making them smile, or are they genuinely interested in getting to know one another? Judging by the light banter, comfortable vibe, and laughter, I’d say it’s the latter.
This event is the start of a year-long program called the Sixth Grade Buddies, in which members of National Honor Society are paired with a sixth grader and write letters back and forth. The Buddy Breakfast serves to allow students to get to know each other and find out what they have in common. Letters are exchanged once a month. NHS member Victoria Ehmann, who has since graduated, started the program last year to great success. The letters grew from short, polite messages to lengthy, personal, and enthusiastic exchanges, often embellished with drawings, illustrations, or candy.
Senior Sarah Faulkner, who participated in the program last year, says of her experience, “I like doing the buddy thing because it gives me an opportunity to connect with the junior high school, and I like talking to people and getting to know them. Last year my buddies were sweet and I looked forward to getting the letters. I like making people feel welcome and I feel like this is a great opportunity to do that.”
Mrs. Moffitt, who oversees the program, says, “I love to see upperclassmen mentoring these excited new students and sharing their experiences and lessons they’ve learned.”
The sixth graders and NHS members look forward to a great year!
